That *is* a light problem. I had problems using a clear top and constant
light, but when I switched light sources the shrooms became more well
behaved, upright citizens.

Try the various recommended flavours of fluorescents, some of them work very
well.

it has everything from sun light to flourescent to incandescent to a
black light on it at any given point in the day

thought pf's albino mutants came from blacklight.

the main light source is natural... then incandescent... then
flourescent... then occasionally a blacklight is on
all these lights just happen to be in the room
my point was just that they get lights of all kinds so if they aren't
gettign enough to figure out what way to go... they probably never will

just letting you know that pf's mutants supposedly came from the
blacklite.

The primary light source should be fluorescent. I use a small 6" long tube
in a 12V fixture, compact fluorescents can also work very well.

Surprisingly enough, sunlight is not as good, and incandescent light is very
poor. Switch to a proper fluorescent tube and you will notice a difference.

yes, all is well now... if any mushrooms grow down now they will have
their own trouble to worry about... like getting through an aluminum
tray

as far as neat little package goes
well let's just say i'm king of the ghetto rig

Not always! I can think of four other reasons of the mushrooms not growing
straight up:

a) it is a sterile mushroom (one which doesn't produce spores). An early
sign that a cubensis mushroom will not produce viable spores (usually the
gills won't become dark either) often is that it doesn't grow into the
direction of the light

b) high temperature. Especially when the temperatures are in the high
eighties (F) or high twenties (C) the mushrooms seem to grow too fast. So
fast that they can not grow towards the light. They try but fall over.

c) white floor of the container (perlite for instance). Then so much light
is reflected that the mushrooms can not see the difference between the light
from the floor and the light from above.

d) the light is not blue enough. Mushrooms do not react towards light which
has a longer wavelength than blue.

i'll get another light and see but i'll bet on the first one
