OK.... this is getting serious.

Do any of you download MP3's using one (or more) of the peer-to-peer utilities available (Kazaa, WinMX, Direct Connect, LimeWire, etc)?

You must be aware that the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has begun a veritable pogrom against this practice. Though it all sounds, frankly, far-fetched, they claim to be targeting individual users, like you and me.

Obviously, a method they could use would be to identify the IP of the user (apparently quite visible on p2p betworks), trace it back to his/her ISP, and legally force the ISP to block such traffic; bar the user altogether, or give the name of the user to the RIAA.

My question is - is there ANY way to anonymise my IP while using one of the above utilities? I know how to use the mail-to-news system on Usenet (using the QuickSilver remailer); and I know how to use anonymous proxies while surfing the web (I use Proxomitron for this) .... but I'm stumped with the p2p angle.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or, better still, links to further information or tools? Thanks.

Why? You and another 45Million users use p2p.

Yup

Yup and I reckon around 200 of the 45 Million will get their fingers
slapped.

Yup sounds pretty reasonable.

There is no iron clad method of securing your p2p traffic without a deficit
in terms of bandwidth but several encrypted p2p apps have surfaced which may
or may not included proxies that mask the originator/recipient IP's.

A simple "Sorry; I haven't a fucking clue" would have sufficed, thank you very much. "May or may not included proxies" indeed! Prat!

You're about as much use as a one-legged man in an arse-kicking contest.

Who kicked your pram? Time for your bottle no doubt

Earth Station 5 direct quote from Zero Paid discussing said p2p application.
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/06062003c.php
Note the use of the term PROXYING theirs not mine ......

_Many of the features announced for ES5 have aroused if not outright
hostility at least a fair amount of skepticism in the P2P community, with
outright rejection reserved for any claims of proxying. That feature is said
to be critical for the future of peer-to-peer systems if users are to be
insulated from subpoenas, court challenges and lawsuits from rights holders.
To date the RIAA has had its only real success attacking individual users
through their open IP's but huge bandwidth costs have prevented the
widespread use of IP masking in other P2P's so far. Interestingly it's here
that the confident bluster of official statements and Taylor's own
boosterism part ways. He's unwilling to commit to the heady guarantee of
"complete anonymity" promised in a recent press release, allowing only that
the client has powerful protection, but it's not "infallible."_

Earth Station 5 direct quote from their site ...........
http://www.earthstation5.com/stealth.html

ONE CLICK PROXY SERVER - Users can send connection requests through
intermediary proxy servers located throughout the world so that the download
destination of a file cannot be traced by any entity whatsoever. There is
nothing for the user to set-up, just right click to enable the proxy server.

If you're that bothered (and obviously paranoid) just stop downloading mp3s
is the most obvious thing to do. If the RIAA are gonna get you, they
ill - so f**cking what!!

Otherwise I suggest you move to a more tolerant country - extreme but it
would work for sure.

Have a nice day.

LOL!

Thanks, folks.... but I've now got ALL the information/materials that I need (from OTHER sources) to make my p2p downloads safe & secure. And what a method! TOTAL IP masking/spoofing, choice of encryption protocols; with NO loss of speed, or connectability! Preliminary tests have been 100% succesful, and stable. Wow!

And thanks Use.Netuser.de; ricard259; KillingJoke; and paul s.

Your clueless, "I-really-don't-know-but-I'm-afraid-to-say-it" - style answers were HUGELY entertaining! God, but I love to watch squirmers squirm!

Well; I'm off to download some more music & movies. Safely. None of YOU are. Bye!

...snigger!

Sorry for the language, but insulting perfect strangers that try their best to help
him *for free*, is just something I can't take.
