Hello there,
I am a new member and have recently became interested in the actual growing of magical mushrooms rather than just eating them...
I've recently tried the rye grain bag technique and am pretty sure I failed miserably... No strong mycelium has began to form yet, and its been about 3 weeks.
I just ordered three rye jars and a new spore sample (10 ml syringe) of the cambodian strain because I have heard they're easy fast growers for beginners.
I plan to build a home made incubator for the jars when they arrive.
I am posting just to see if anyone has some advice for a beginner because I really don't want to mess up this time, and wont be able to afford to keep buying new supplies (poor college student)...
Anything is appreciated!

What strain did you use for the rye grain? Some strains don't like grains while others do.
Make sure you keep it in a warm dark place. Perhaps shake it up a little every week.
When I ordered a rye bag it didn't work for me either. The best method imo is to start out small instead of trying to do a big bulk grow and failing because that's a lot of fail.
My friend recently recommended that i use 1/8 pint jars instead of the 1/2's because the spores will just eat it up that much quicker. It literally took about 12 days for it to completely eat up the 1/8 jar. After that you can case it for a bigger yield.
Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility Sterility!!!
Rubbing Alcohol to wipe everything. No airflow, wear gloves. Use brand new jars. Sterilize in a pressure cooker longer than recommended. Being ultra careful you should have better results.

I used cambodian for the first try in the rye bag. Still no progress on that. My jars should be here any day, and are supposedly pre-sterilized with the injection site and what not...
Any suggestions for what temp I should keep them at for the first stage after inoculation (in the dark)?

around 84-85 degrees, keep em in a box in the dark.
72-82 are the min and max parameters. Bags are usually several degrees hotter in the center cuz myc gives off heat. You want it no higher than 82 for colonizing, 80 is perfect....then when you spawn and put it in the fruiting chamber 75-78 is optimal...
If you use bags of stuff like millet, it is best to use a liquid culture to noc it up and mix it. If you use a multispore syringe you noc it up and dont mix...then when 30-50% colonized you mix well once and leave it til 100% then spawn....

I will try to stop in more often but my mold biz has been taking off cuz of the summer and I don't have as much time. But will help in any way I can...
