Ok this is my 2nd time casing in the last month and within 5 days there is a bluish/grey, powdery mold under the casing growing on my substrate. The substrate is fully grown with no contams and I use very steril techniques. I even pasturize my casing for 10 min in the micro. Then i mist the casing with H202 before placing in my incubating chamber. Should I sterilize my perlite layer that the substrate sits on? Ive never had problems like this before. What am i doing wrong?

i wouldn't use a microwave to pasteurize your casing put it in quart jars and put the quart in a pot of water and bring it to a full boil put a long stem meat thermometer in the middle if the quart of casing and when the thermometer reads 150 shut off the fire and if the temp drops below 140 w in a hour just turn on the burner till it reaches the temp again dont use h2o2 either and there really isnt a reason to sterilize the perlite
I don't usually case at all since Limeade proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't make a difference in any way with cubies....if anything it just adds contamns.
As Trip said, a Microwave isn't strong enough nor does it do an even job. I used to worry about it then we tried PC'ing poo and coir and just as I figured, the microorganism myth is just that, a myth...cubies don't need any organisms....and PC'd coir and poo works just as good as pasturized... so prior to that I would bring my stuff to a boil, turn off and cover and let sit for 20 min....or you can throw your verm in the oven for a lil while...though it is best to PC.
So next batch, don't case. When you mix your spawn/poo or coir, mix well and cover for 3-5 days til colonized, then put it in the FC and be patient...
It should be in a tray or on foil, you shouldn't let it sit directly on the perlite...

I have had great grows with out casing. But if you are going to case just use a thin layer of casing just enough to keep your sub from geting to dry. And dont put it on the perlite take NHMI addvice.

just kidding, casing sucks IMO, if I do it, i try to keep it as light as possible. I hate picking mushies from a casing, dirty little fuckers.

I read you can go w/ a 50/50 H202/H20 in the perlite to keep contams down.

perlite dont harbor contams and if ur sub aint sitting on the perlite there aint no need for it but u can do it if it makes u feel better
