I live on the IL. River in Lacon, IL. Grew up in LaSalle Peru, IL about 40 miles up river. In this area the Sheepshead/Hen of the Woods is called a Coreen.:)

I'm not sure that is how it is spelled or what the word is derived from -but that is how it is pronounced. The C is pronounced like a K. Does anyone know how that word is actually spelled:confused:

It is strange I have found and ate Coreens since my dad taught me about mushrooms as a child. And I do not ever recall seeing it in print.(I was born in 1941)
In fact Sunday I found a perfect 10 pounder attached below a huge pin oak.:) My dad who was a great outdoorsman would be 101 if he was alive would have been proud of me.

The largest one I ever found was in 1993 with my 3 year old grandson. It was prob 25 lbs. Big as a bushel basket.

Needless to say I also pick and eat other summer and fall mushrooms and try to get out for morels in the spring.:)

I love puffballs. Fry them in batter. Taste like egg plant:)
