hey guys i saw this video

mushbox dotcom /rye-grain-jars.html

(the one in the middle of the page, sorry for the link, i has < 15 posts :()

it says that the lids have a white filter over the top of them. does anyone know what this filter is? I'm worried that im not getting enough gas exchange (aka none, mine are like ~100% sealed off). Will this hinder mycelium growth? what can i do to increase gas exchange without introducing contams? having a top layer of verm wont work because i'll have to shake the jars eventually, dispersing it.

i have mason jars like 3/4 filled with rye, the lids on with 2 holes drilled in for inoculating, and i just scotch taped over the holes instead of leaving the tin foil on that i pressure cooked with. I can probably switch the current lids if necessary

they're using filter discs from myco suppliers... and you do need some gas exchange, how much and at what point to initiate seems to be debated. It does not hurt to wait till colonization has slowed (this will be do to the lack of gas exchange) before you do any thing. Giving the mycellium time to take hold of as much substrate as possible will help for when when you do make a switch. Mycellium does not need gas exchange earily on and waiting will give cotams less uncolonized substrate to steal.
-I suggest using tyvek - house wrap - the shroomers ghetto filter disc. It holds in moisture, allows gas exchange, can be pced, and helps keep out contams. Put your cover on first, I do rubber side down, then tyvek - white side up so you can write on it, then your ring. You can screw it down tightly when pc-ing. I have yet to burst a jar doing so. Make sure you have a good sized breather hole or two, and injection hole(s),

-in your case you might want to either punch a hole or several (cleaned with bleach or alcohol), take the ring off and cover with sterile tyvek - pced or washed with 10% bleach water or 91% rubbing alcohol, then replace the ring.
-Replace the cover if you choose, but use a golve box! Minimized open air exposure!
-Or you could unscrew the lid and pop the cover and leaving them loose for the gas exchange.
-Or punch/drill a large hole and stuff with cotton or polyfill (pillow stuffing) for a filter
-Or you may find/figure out a better idea
-the main principals are to allow the gas to escape/exchange while keeping contams out. Be as sterile a possible, your spores are at risk.

-IMO I think peeling off the tape, replacing it with cotton/ first-aid medical tape plus crack the lid and eave it loose with tinfoil over it. Switching the lids is just as good I guess. Drilling and punching is going to stir the air around too much.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
