well i picked up this cheap $30 walmart pressure cooker and it doesn't have that little grate thing in the bottom. if i just sit the jars in there with water will they burst or not?

It could. Put an old t-shirt at the bottom before filling it with water and place the jars on the fabric. It works.

or you could just use several layers of tinfoil works well also

Hey Bro, if you have some of the narrow jar rings they work very well also, just try to arrange them as tightly as possible on the bottom and off set the jars over the rings, seems to steam better than using wash cloths, but I dont have proof:cool:

I have heard that you shouldnt use anything like a towel or t-shirt.
Like stated above, you should use old jar rings or something similar.

I have been using a facecloth forever or a towel if I am PC'ing plastic....but I have only lost a single jar and it was the 1st time and without a rag on the bottom.

a rag or cloth is more than adequate, unless the the pressure cooker has too little water and runs dry. Jar rings like stated above also works very well. Feel free to experiment with whatever you can find. I know of someone who uses fiber glass heat insulation at the bottom, however I cannot comment on that.
