There are various alternative substrates for jars...........people have even used hominy for it.
great... i was just wondering if there were any good alternatives... i wonder why every one recommends the same substrate

Probably because a lot of people use the pf tek which calls for brf and vermiculite to make up the substrate.

Because just about every alternative has been tried, you could use patricks plain brown rice jar method if ya follow the link in my signature and look in the tek section or PM Patrick.
