How to Build a Microtub, AD style

This is just something I decided to do today. I went to wally world to get paper and walked by sterilite so I got these for $3+ each

This was totally random but I bought these foil roast pans the other day and luckily with a lil modification. If you are smart you will poke the holes before you do the perlite in the sides a few inches above.

I bent the sides up so they would fit in the tub. These are a few inches shorter so there should be enough moisture from the perlite though I will mist it periodically anyway

So then I stuffed cotton balls throgh the holes that were a lil bigger than a pencil. You should use polyfil due to cotton being organic and able to feed contamns but I have been using these same ones on jars and only had one contaminate so they are fine. Polyfil is always the 1st choice though. The holes should be about an inch above the perlite.

While I was doing this I did an improvised pasteurization. I laid a shirt that doesn't fit on the floor and poured poop in the middle. I then tied the poo ball that was left a lil loose so water can get through it and cut off everything above the twist tie. Last time I poured water that was almost ready to boil over it with it weighted in a five gallon bucket. This time I would add boiling water every 20 min or so that had just reached the point of boiling. I figured it may be too hot in spots but not in the center so you should kill off most of the bad stuff and then the lil bit of stuff left when mixed will recolonize to help the mushies produce and we like a 50/50 spawn/substrate so it colonizes fast and we don't have to worry about contamination. I only have enough spawn for 1 I think.

Now you can choose to do it either way. I chose to make two instead of one tall one. If you go with the tall one you need to put 4-6 more holes at the top and middle since you will be sealing that til harvest. I don't have tons of shrooms that grow tall so I would rather have two batches regular height.

Then you put your spawn in the tray and we are good to go. I will be doing that shortly.

Though 50/50 spawn to substrate is a lil overkill it will ensure that even if you do get a lil contamination the myc will claim the substrate in most cases before the contamn unless it is one that grows on myc. Certain strains do better than others. I had a compost bag of cambos fruit even though the block looked like cinnamon swirls of mold. The fruits were very small and obviously not gonna be printed due to the mold but they were only as wide as a nickle when they opened anyway. The other grow I did without contamns from the same genetics were 2.5-3inches in diameter so they are effected by the contamns but still gave a 1st flush. When I dunked it was when I found the mold cuz it fell apart when I picked it up. There was nothing visible on the outside after it was colonized. The bag had been contaminated and I through some stalled wbs in it and was just throwing it out so I forgot and came back days later to fid a colonized block....So that really shows that shroomies want to grow despite their dificulties. I would like to see this site be somewhere, where people can come and really learn and find the info and help they need quickly. I am starting to like shroomery but for a noob it would suck because there is a lot of BS and sorting through it is tough. Which is why I spent most of my time at Shroomtalk. I could actually get the info I needed without being talked down to for not knowing something. After all I was there to learn.

So anyone ever needing help with something please ask. I know Patrick, Stroph, and MyWhat? will all be glad to help as well as almost everyone else who is a member here. I am proud to have such a good group of friends. Everyone is respectful here and so far no one has been banned ever. So I am very happy. I got my adderall so I can think again...but I abuse it so I will run out in a couple weeks. It works good if I could take 4 a day but I can't. I tried and lost about 30lbs in a week and some change...so I have to take weight gainer too....but I can think!...lol


After massacring the substrate so the pins all along the edges would have room I noticed that the 2nd flush of the 1st tray had begun underneath it and there were too many to ignore it so I Broke it into sections and placed on a bed of verm and then cased in verm to keep the moisture up. Even the cake has pins everywhere.

Haven't had any problems so far and have used foil for the last year...only problem is sidepinning from the reflecting light.

And the 1st flush was waiting for me this morning. Funny how I always thought the black on top was spores but there is nothing above em...hehe


200grams wet, not too bad for my 1st wbs to poo with a casing.

That is why I love the OR. I took some tissue from inside the stalks and stuck in empti petri dishes so if anyone has a cloning tek that is easy, now would be a great time to post it.

This looks wierd, the ones on the lil one look different from the big one and they are the same cake, I just cut it. I had nocced up some of the jars with texas but OR isn't even a cubie and idk what's up...would be bizzare if a cubie and a subcubie were sharing a cake...kinda would explain why when I cut it the small side pinned everywhere almost immediately...I thought it might have had to do with burning it...it may just be a fat freak, we shall see cuz I don't think they could share but the pfax wasn't possible either and it happend...so just have to see. Probably just another subcubie look. We are all used to the varieties of cubies but I never heard of subcubensis until OR.

So the 1st tray began fruiting on the bottom for some reasin and the ones on the bottom were going under the tray and when the apt was getting inspected I thought it should be hidden so I had to break up the tray....but I tried to not wreck any forming fruit bodies so I positioned the pieces so either side can still grow up so the tray with shrooms is actually the second flush of the first tray but with a lil extra verm. The other tray I did in the minitub only pinned on the sides and there wasn't enough room so I cut a strip out of the middle to make room and put the strip in the FC to fruit separately. Just nocced up a bunch of stuff. The ricewater LC actually turned out to be all myc so it looked like a giant jellyfish...lol

I actually do things similar, only I use disposable aluminum cake pans, they are like 3 for a dollar at dollar stores (no lids), and they aren't deep enough for me to worry about reflecting light making side pins.

The only thing I don't get is what are you shoving cotton balls in, the bottom of an aluminum trey? (if so y?) Also I use poly-fil because it's cheap as hell 3 dollars for a huge bag, I use it to make a shotgun style Rubbermaid with a lot of poly-fil holes on all four sides, I do this for FAE during fruiting, because I over worry about contaminants, even though I have never had one. I think it's why I haven't gotten one, so I don't plan on changing things any time soon, :).

[EDIT] Main point I'm trying to make here, is what are you putting those cotton balls in? because it is unclear.
