I'm completely new at this and I'm about to grow my first shrooms but I just want to be clear on safety. I'm aware that the syringes can become contaminated and I just wanted to know what the shelf life for the syringes are and also what happens if they do become contaminated with bacteria or anything else.

I guess my question is do I have to worry about potentially growing contaminated/unsafe mushrooms?

Yes you do. Its important to be able to know a contamination when u see one. Look at pictures of properly colonized substrates. Makes sure yours look like the pictures you see. Using a glove box it a good way to avoid contaminants to begin with. Remember inoculation is the key step were contaminants occur. Good luck sfcince!!! :)

ya, I agree...though contamination can be a pain and even have health risks sometimes, mushies and mold can't clamp so they wont be transfering toxins to the shrooms however if you get something like trich it will minimize fruiting and you will end up with it on all you stuff....the glove box is the best idea

you can still eat shrooms off contaminated cakes if they actually fruit.....no transfer of toxins as stated above!

I don't know if swim's cake is contaminated, it looks fine. Fruiting body is the mushroom?

So if it has dark blue lines on it, it can still be eaten?

yes it can, my albino penises developed lines but it was due to being so strong I think, they couldn't help but have some oxidation going on...looked like blue veins...

slandshroomynewbie,

Um, mold can cause lot's of health problems in people (I'm an MD, well will be soon). It can cause severe cough (most common symptom from mold), but it can present itself in an unusual way based on the person and how much/what kind of the mold was inhaled/ingested, and can actually kill you, but if the mushroom has no mold on it, it is safe to eat no toxins can be carried from the mold on the cake to the mushroom, unless the mold is on the actual mushroom.

[EDIT] sorry after reading that it sounded scary, most molds are safe to inhale/ingest, and vary few people (like 1%), are allergic to un-dangerous molds, but if you have any symptoms, be sure to ask your doctor if mold could have caused it, since you now know it's in your area. You should be fine mold is everywhere.

it is still fine, just wash the mushies before you dry em.
