Legislation to strengthen the laws against drug abuse won cross-party
backing in the Lords but it remained unclear whether the Drugs Bill
would become law before the General Election. Peers gave an unopposed
second reading to the Bill, which has already cleared the Commons. But
Home Secretary Charles Clarke will need the co-operation of the
Opposition parties to fast track the Bill into law before Parliament
is dissolved. The Bill raises sentences for dealing to children or
near schools, gives police more time to detain people suspected of
concealing drugs by swallowing them, permits ultrasound scans for
drugs, and clarifies the illegal status of so-called magic mushrooms.
